Listening to Gary Kriebel over the telephone, it's hard not to think: "I know that voice. But from where?"

For the past couple of years, this 37-year-old Burke resident has been renting out his voice to radio and television commercials through his business, Old Dominion Productions, which just celebrated its two-year anniversary.

A good start to 2006

2006 is off to a good start for me in the voice-over world. It started out with a phone call on New Years from Shirley, a friend through MySpace.com. She was going to be involved in a narration project for the International Relief and Development, Inc. about their training center for small business in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Hundres of Achenese people attend classes at the training center to learn how to start their own buiness in post-tsunami Indonesia.

Shirley was voicing the female lines, but they required a narrator, and she suggested me. Many thanks to Shirley as I got the job for the narrator, who’s part had the bulk of the lines. I’ve seen part of the short film and am looking forward to seeing how the whole project turned out.

In mid-January, I auditioned for a TV commercial voiceover for the Benjamin Moore company. I was pleased to learn a few days later that they selected me for the job. This job was interesting because when the recording took place in Los Angeles while I was speaking in Virginia.

I have a plug-in for ProTools called Source-Connect that allows connections to other ProTools systems. We then employed the services of a third company to bridge my ProTools system to the recording studio’s ISDN line in Los Angeles. This third company is in Connecticut, so my voice traveled from Virginia, to Connecticut on the way to the studio in Los Angeles. The recording session went flawlessly and under an hour later, I recorded several versions of a commercial for Benjamin Moore Premium Exterior Stain. So listen out for me telling you about “One Family, One Home, One BEAUTIFUL DECK."
